The Starship is SpaceX's Vehicle That Could Ferry Humans to Mars
Elon Musk Releases Pictures That Show The Progress Made In Assembling the Starship Prototype
SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, shared new pictures that showed the progress the company has made so far on its Starship Orbital Spacecraft Prototype. The Starship Mk 1 and Mk 2 Prototypes are being built simultaneously in South Texas at Boca Chica and in Cocoa, Florida.
The Starship will take over the StarHopper, which is a scaled-down version that was used to test the Raptor engine with low altitude hop flights. The Starship will be used to test flights at much higher altitudes and speeds with 3-6 Raptor engines used simultaneously.
In the pictures above, the round sections of the prototype being lowered on the top of one another are about 9m in diameter and have a curved top section as seen in the second photo. When complete, SpaceX plans to run a test of the prototype as early as October with a goal of reaching 63,000 ft. then a follow-up test of higher velocity testing at similar heights before embarking on a first orbital Flight.
The Starship will replace the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy and the Dragon Capsule as the main SpaceX vehicle for its commercial operations. SpaceX also plans to use to service Earth orbital needs, ferry supplies and astronauts to Mars and beyond.
