Tesla is set to take on the Taycan at their home turf
Former World Champion Nico Rosberg To Steer The Model S At Nurburgring Track
Tesla has recruited former Formula One world champion, Nico Rosberg, to steer the Tesla Model S at the Nurburgring-Nordschleife track in Germany. This was after Porsche set a new track time record of 7mins and 42 seconds in their new all-electric Taycan two weeks ago.
The Taycan demonstrated its ability to sustain high speeds over a long period of time which is a well-known deficit of electric cars and the Model S in particular. The Model S failed to deliver a competitive time on the same track in 2014.
Tesla’s chances were boosted after CEO; Elon Musk accepted an offer by Rosberg to drive the Model S on the track. The Taycan was driven by Lars Kern who is also a professional driver and is Porsche’s official driver.
Rosberg was born in Germany to a Finnish Father and 1982 Formula One World Champion Keke Rosberg and a German mother. He joined Formula One in 2006 for Williams before switching to Mercedes in 2010. It was at Mercedes that he enjoyed his best period in F1. He notched up 30 pole positions and won 23 Grand Prix. He had a fierce rivalry with teammate Lewis Hamilton finishing second to him in 2014 and 2015 before toppling the Englishman in 2016 to become a world champion like his father. He retired thereafter
The Tesla Model S will be on track tomorrow but no official time will be communicated by the organizers. Tesla will take part in a pool testing rather than have a reserved track for their run.
