The 3-motor Plaid Model S Crushes the Porsche Taycan at Nurburgring Race Track
The 3 motor “Plaid” Tesla Model S has already posted better times than the Porsche Taycan at the Nurburgring Race Track, according to a German car magazine. Auto Motor und Sport, which has been covering the German car scene since 1946. Tesla has been testing the new Model S vehicles at the famous race track.
The week before, CEO Elon Musk had said that the Model S will be on the race track after the Porsche Taycan had set a new four-door electric car record on the same track. Tesla then announced a Model S with a 3-motor “Plaid” powertrain and a new chassis prototype.
The goal was to test the new vehicles on one of the most challenging race tracks in the world instead of going after the record set by Porsche. It is obvious, however, that Tesla would want to push the vehicles to their limits in challenging environments.
Auto Motor und Sport reported that Tesla invited Nordschleife expert, Thomas Mutsch, among other drivers to drive the cars. Their observer at the track reported that Mutsch did a lap in 7 minutes and 23 seconds one of the modified Model S vehicles. An excerpt from the report by Auto Motor und Sport read:
“But what the new drive can do he has already shown on some very fast laps. Our observer reports a hand-stopped lap time of 7:23 mins-as I said: hand-stopped with corresponding inaccuracies. But that would be about 20 seconds faster than the Porsche Taycan. The weather conditions on Monday (16.9) were rather cool with 18 degrees and heavy cloud cover.”
The Porsche Taycan did a lap in 7 minutes and 42 seconds last month. The time set by Tesla is not official and it remains to be seen if Tesla will attempt to break this record in the coming months.
The new “Plaid” powertrain will not be released until next year according to CEO, Elon Musk.
