General Motors (GM) is making strides in its electric vehicle (EV) and self-driving initiatives, achieving record overall and EV deliveries in the second quarter of this year. GM and its dealership network successfully delivered 696,086 vehicles in the U.S. during the second quarter, indicating a 0.6% increase year-over-year. The automaker also celebrated record EV sales in Q2, with 21,930 deliveries, signifying a 40% surge year over year and a 34% rise from Q1.

GM’s Senior Vice President and North America Division President, Marissa West, expressed optimism, stating, “We have an incredible portfolio of diverse vehicles and we’re flexible, so we can win as more customers embrace EVs and we can keep winning if they want to stay with the engine technologies they know.”

Further highlights from GM’s press release include Q2 marking the company’s best total sales quarter since Q4 2020 and the eighth consecutive quarter of year-over-year retail sales growth. The Lyriq EV notably experienced significant growth, with Q2 sales climbing 26% from Q1.

GM’s lineup includes EVs such as the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Bolt, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV, and electric trucks for BrightDrop. The Lyriq EV emerged as the top-selling EV in Q2, followed by the Blazer EV, Hummer EV, and Silverado EV.

Looking ahead, GM aims to offer 10 EV nameplates by the year’s end, including the Optiq EV. The company raised its financial guidance for 2024 following better-than-expected Q1 revenue reports in April, with an anticipated capital expenditure of approximately $11.5 billion.

In efforts to propel its EV agenda, GM also disclosed a $390 million investment in its Fairfax Assembly Plant to support the next-generation Chevy Bolt. Moreover, the company is working on revitalizing its self-driving subsidiary, Cruise, after a prior incident involving one of its driverless vehicles and a pedestrian.
